Alation has been named a Leader in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Data Intelligence Platform Software 2026 Vendor Assessment.
The IDC MarketScape evaluated 15 vendors based on their current capabilities and future strategies, drawing on vendor input, publicly available information, and customer experiences.
IDC identified three areas of strength for Alation. Two of those strengths can be seen in practice at the BBC, where trusted data supports decisions across a complex, highly accountable organization.
Finding the data that matters
IDC identified "Behavioral, active metadata at the core of the catalog" as an Alation strength. By showing how data is used, active metadata helps organizations identify their most valuable assets and focus governance where it matters most.
At the BBC, the stakes for getting that right are unusually high. The corporation collected £3.843 billion in licence fee income against £5.9 billion in total income in 2024/25, heightening the need for transparent, defensible decisions about how data is used.¹
Nathalie Berdat joined in early 2023 as the BBC's first Head of Data & AI Governance and spotted a key symptom within weeks.² Weekly active accounts are a critical metric, yet different teams arrived at different numbers. What struck her was how fast the conversation changed: "People stopped asking whether the number is right and started asking, 'So who produced that number?'" she shared in an interview with CEO Satyen Sangani.
Behind that single metric sat thousands of tables and multiple versions of the same dataset, each with slightly different filters, exclusions, and interpretations, with ownership often unclear. Teams had absorbed the quirks and knew which source to trust for which purpose, but that knowledge lived in individuals rather than systems. "Tribal knowledge is not something that we can scale," Berdat says.
On the first try, the team pulled usage statistics and targeted the most-viewed dashboards, on the reasonable theory that popularity signals value. "But it was the wrong way to approach this," she says. Heavily used dashboards serve daily monitoring and low-level analytics. They are not necessarily the sources behind the organization’s most consequential decisions. So the team went top-down instead, to the audience scorecard the board actually reviews. Usage signals narrowed the field; business criticality determined where to focus.
Lineage did the rest, revealing how each priority metric was calculated and surfacing the competing sources feeding it. Once that was visible in one place, the platform began shifting from a place to double-check answers to the starting point for finding them. "Alation is now really part of the workflow," Berdat says. "Not just, 'Let me double check,' but 'Let me start there.'"
Turning trusted data into a reusable product
IDC also cited "Governed, AI-ready data products on an open, federated architecture" as a key Alation strength. Active metadata helps identify the assets that matter and where governance is needed. A governed data product then packages those assets with the context and controls that make them trustworthy, so any team can discover and reuse them.
Berdat's team rebuilt the competing sources behind weekly active accounts into a single certified data product, with SLAs, embedded quality checks, and a named owner. The scale of that work is significant: the BBC reported an average 23.6 million weekly active online accounts in 2024/25.¹ The build took a few sprints, but adoption took nine to twelve months, as teams transitioned from familiar tables to a shared definition.
That work is now creating opportunities across the broader organization. The BBC is structured by domain: teams get their own spaces to build in, while governance supplies the framework that keeps them consistent enterprise-wide. A few dozen data products exist today, and each one makes the next easier to build. "It's like Lego, right?" Berdat says. "If you have one data product that you can then build another data product on top of, it just unlocks so many possibilities."
Stacked that way, the products start returning value. "Building a data product that gives you a trusted source of truth on who works where and under what cost center lets you expose that product and then build something like return on investment on top of it," Berdat points out. The data product is not the result; its value comes from the decisions, services, and additional products that use it as a foundation.
That compounding shows up in IDC's data. Per the report, “organizations with high data product maturity are 5.5 times more likely to have generative AI in production [than low-maturity peers] (72% versus 13%) and 4.6 times more likely to have agentic AI in production.” They also report roughly three times the improvement in financial and operational KPIs.4
From data catalog to AIOS
The BBC is not yet deploying agentic AI in production, and Berdat is deliberate about what must come first. "Before we would hand an agent autonomy, even to a small degree, we absolutely need clear ownership of the data it would touch. We need that documented lineage so we can trace a bad decision back to its source. We need machine-readable governance rules, not just a policy."
Ownership, lineage, and machine-readable rules are the same foundations that helped turn one contested metric into a trusted data product. The work required to make data trustworthy for people also prepares it to be used responsibly by AI.
This recognition reflects Alation’s evolution from pioneering the modern data catalog to building AIOS™, an open, governed, self-improving intelligence operating system. We are proud to help organizations like the BBC establish the trusted data and context needed to move from AI ambition to responsible business impact.
