Alation and Teradata Extend the Alation Collaborative Data Catalog to Teradata’s Unified Data Architecture

Alation and Teradata provide an easy way to access, discover and trust data in database or Hadoop

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – September 8, 2015Alation, Inc., the data intelligence company, and Teradata, a leading analytics solutions company, today announced the general availability of Alation’s collaborative data catalog on the Teradata Unified Data Architecture™ (UDA) for greater database and Hadoop connectivity. Now, with extended connection to the Teradata UDA, Alation catalogs queries run through Teradata QueryGrid™ and Teradata Asterâ Analytics. The extension adds to Alation’s existing Teradata database connectivity, making it easy for analysts to search, query, curate and collaborate on data no matter where it is stored.

“The Alation team continues to deliver technical innovations that simplify the complexity of the analytical ecosystem by providing a single data catalog that encompasses Teradata, Hadoop, Aster, and other analytic engines,” said Oliver Ratzesberger, executive vice president and chief product officer, Teradata. “The entire organization can participate in the creation of structure, tagging and metadata, bringing together people who are working on similar problems. Integrating the data in one place transforms the information into insights and lets these users engage with data in new ways, resulting in greater business impact.”

Organizations like eBay and Albertsons are using Alation’s collaborative data catalog with Teradata’s UDA to overcome the challenges that analysts face in navigating today’s modern data architecture which is often distributed across multiple databases and Hadoop distributions. With automated cataloging of enterprise data and a simple Structured Query Language (SQL) interface optimized for analyst productivity, Alation allows analysts to easily compose queries no matter where their data is stored.

“We are constantly adding new data into our Teradata environment to fuel our strategic thinking and allow us to better serve our customers. Streamlining our ability to discover and iterate on data is key to our ability to innovate. Alation allows us to discover and understand data inside of the Teradata database 70 percent faster than before,” said Kristie Allen, director, personalization and targeting, Albertsons. “Alation’s data catalog reduces the complexity of system navigation, provides clarity on how the data is related to our business definitions, and encourages collaboration across our globally dispersed analytics teams.”

Alation now natively supports the addition of Teradata QueryGrid, Teradata Aster Analytics and the Teradata Distribution of Presto, the distributed SQL query engine. With this extension, data analysts can not only query data distributed across Hadoop, MySQL, Oracle, Vertica, Teradata and any of the many supported databases and file systems, but also share queries to collaborate among themselves and gain insights faster.

“Extending connectivity to cover the full UDA platform, inclusive of Hadoop and Aster, is a reflection of our commitment to cataloging data no matter where the data lives. We are committed to a deep partnership with Teradata and their customers, who are embracing the strategic goal of building more data-driven organizations,” said Satyen Sangani, CEO and co-founder, Alation.
