Paul Walker

“The team here is very collaborative. I think it is in the nature of the tool we sell, but everyone contributes and puts forth ideas to help the greater team.”
Tell us more about your job. What’s a typical day like in your role?

As an AE, my day varies based on what is on the calendar for that day. During a typical week, I will be doing pipeline-generation activities, organizing workshops for hands-on engagements with clients, providing demos of the catalog, working through legal contracts with clients, helping coach others on the team, and more.

What attracted you to work at Alation? How did you know it would be a good fit?

When I first started looking into Alation, I saw an exciting product in a growing space with a strong vision from our CEO Satyen Sangani. As I unpacked that more, I began to realize the culture was one that allowed anyone to make an impact and I would be able to directly influence my company’s goals. There is a high energy at Alation and the people here want to make an impression.

Tell us about when you’ve felt most proud of your work or colleagues.

Last year was a great year for me personally and for our organization. Despite a global pandemic, we hit our targeted goals at Alation and continued on the success plan we had outlined. I was proud to be named the top contributor for the company and I’m excited to be part of a company that defied the odds and delivered on its targets.

What do you value most about your company’s or team’s culture? What sets it apart from other places you’ve worked?

The team here is very collaborative. I think it is in the nature of the tool we sell, but everyone contributes and puts forth ideas to help the greater team. There is always good input from everyone, whether they are a seasoned rep with many deals under their belt or someone who just started last week. The leadership team also makes sure to recognize and promote this culture.

Describe a time when you felt excited by the innovation happening at your company.

The headlines this year have been amazing: $110 million in Series D funding; Far and away leader in Forrester Wave for data governance; and “partner of the year” from Snowflake. With what we have planned to deliver over the course of the next year, I think this is just the beginning.

What advice do you have for someone in your field applying to jobs at your company?

Come ready to participate. With a company growing as fast as Alation, we need contributors who are ready to hit the ground running. If you have a mindset of “how can I help,” then you will quickly find it reciprocated to contribute to your own success.
